We are writing to complain about the irresponsible editorial on Barbara Eretzian (Jan 10).

By making unsubstantiated suppositions about her temporary contract, the editorial unnecessarily outraged the public and forced the school committee to defend a decision it had made in public, and, by all accounts, with much consideration.

What compelled the Sun Journal to accuse Eretzian of being overpaid? The Sun Journal was obviously unaware of the many ways that she has served the city’s schools – far beyond the stipulations of her contract.

We recognize the importance of keeping an eye out for government waste, but the unfounded criticisms of the school administration served only to promote the anger of those most likely to demand rash and, ultimately, self-defeating cuts in the schools’ budgets.

Ill-informed accusations solve nothing, and risk driving away the people we have most reason to praise.
