Although the attendance at the opening of the Food Fair in City Hall was not as large as was expected, still the management are satisfied and believe that the remaining nights of the week will see large crowds.

In the center of the hall facing the stage is the display of the White House coffee. The National Coal Tar Company of Boston displays Carbonal, a disinfectant, and Amatite, the waterproof roofing. The Barthel Blow Lamp Company of Boston shows heating apparatus manufactured in Germany. The C-Curity Skirt Fastener, the Maine headquarters for which is in Bangor, is looked after by Mrs. W. E. Rice of Lewiston, who is the local agent. The Twin Mountain Spring have a booth of the mineral water.

• Rain fell in Maine today for the fifth consecutive day pushing the precipitation total for the month to more than seven inches and more than three inches above normal.

• The Androscoggin County Civil Defense and Public Safety organization is planning monthly tests of the air raid warning equipment but unless otherwise notified, no public participation will be required. The tests are being conducted to make sure that the electrical equipment which activates the alarms is in working order.

PEARL HARBOR – Tomorrow, the first Japanese warships will call at Hawaii since the Pearl Harbor attack a little more than 16 years ago. The destroyer and three frigates under command of Adm. Sadayoshi Nakayama are on a 46-day training cruise.

PALMYRA – Poison has killed 80,000 trout in a private fish hatchery, state officials say. The state Department of Environmental Protection said Tuesday that Rotenone – a well-known fish poison – was found in the waters of the Cedar Springs Trout Farm in Palmyra. The 10- to 12-month-old trout were found dead Friday.

• The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department this week will begin using “intrusion detection devices” that will alert the department when burglaries are taking place at homes and businesses in the county.
