SABATTUS – The community is invited to the Sabattus Central School’s own version of the popular game show, “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Sabattus students are calling their game show, “Are You Smarter Than a Sixth Grader,” since it involves sixth-graders. Anyone attending will be entertained and learn a few things, Sabattus Central School Principal Beverly Coursey promised Monday.

During the show, about a dozen parents will be put on the spot and asked to answer questions from the grades one to six curriculum, sixth-grade teacher Jane Blais explained Monday.

The questions could be similar to these: What body of water does the Mississippi River flow into? What is three-fourth’s of 16? (Those were practice questions that won’t be asked Wednesday, Blais said.)

All of the school’s 46 sixth-graders are involved. Some will be in the show’s “class” helping parents answer questions. Others will wear dark glasses and play security agents. “They’ll make sure everyone behaves and protect the host,” Blais mused.

Sixth-grader Zach Fisher will be the host, playing the school’s own version of Jeff Foxworthy in the televised game show. Still other sixth-graders will be designated “crowd surfers” who will pick parents to come up and answer questions.

In addition to playing roles, students have helped write the script and produced their own commercials. The commercials will be anti-tobacco messages students made from what they learned in health classes, and pro-recycling commercials from what students learned in science.

This is the first time the Sabattus school has hosted such an event. It came about after a challenge from administration for educators to come up with ideas to get the community into the school.

“Our open houses are very well attended, but we wanted to allow parents to have more knowledge of what students are doing,” Coursey said. Studies show that students who come from families and communities engaged in learning have more academic success, she said.

Social studies teacher Allyson Ferguson suggested the “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” idea, which won support from other faculty members at the school, Blais said.

The show is expected to run about one hour. Afterward, people will be invited to visit the cafeteria where student work will be showcased.
