PORTLAND (AP) – Maine’s two U.S. senators and 17 colleagues are asking the Secretary of Homeland Security to delay implementation of new requirements to enter the United States by land from Canada.

Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins and the others want Secretary Michael Chertoff to continue with the current requirement that people show a government ID and state their nationality.

Starting Thursday, the oral declaration will no longer be accepted. Border crossers will either have to present a document such as a passport or a driver’s license along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

Many fear the requirements will stifle commerce on the border.
