FARMINGTON – A Mazda pickup truck flipped on Route 2 Thursday in a mid-morning crash after the driver failed to see another truck with a horse trailer approaching.

Ernest Butterfield, 81, of Chesterville, came to a stop at the end of High Street, said police officer Shane Cote. His wife, Socorro, 71, looked north on Route 2 and saw two vehicles but didn’t see the truck behind them.

Butterfield pulled out in front of the heavier 1999 truck driven by Floyd Eller, 60, of New Sharon, who was hauling a horse trailer with a couple of horses inside.

The truck hit the rear wheel of Butterfield’s 1994 Mazda truck, flipping it onto its side, Cote said.

Both Butterfields were wearing seat belts and were not injured. Other motorists started to help them out of the vehicle, Cote said, when Farmington Fire Rescue arrived with a ladder and assisted, he said.

Eller told police that the horses did not appear to be injured, but he planned to check them out when he got home. He was able to drive his vehicle away, although Cote estimated damage to the grill and hood of his truck at $2,000.

Efforts to reach Eller later were not successful.

The Butterfields’ truck was towed. Cote estimated $1,000 damage to that vehicle.

NorthStar Ambulance and Farmington Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.
