PERU – A routine traffic stop put a 25-year-old man behind bars Saturday because he failed to show up in court last month to answer a charge of aggravated assault.
Daniel Gerald Billings of 523 Milton Road in Milton Township was arrested by Cpl. Chancey Libby of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office after being stopped on Route 108.
Billings was indicted in December on a charge of aggravated assault, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. According to the indictment, the incident occurred in Rumford on March 7, 2007.
Court documents say a notice of his Jan. 7 arraignment was returned undeliverable from a Rumford Avenue address. A warrant of arrest, which stated that Billings was a Carthage resident, was issued Jan. 15.
Billings remained at the Oxford County Jail on Monday night on $5,000 cash or $25,000 worth of real estate.
