Baxter State Park is located in north-central Maine, which is in the Piscataquis county. The southern entrance is located north of Millinocket and is the most used entrance in the park. This long entrance reaches almost 17 miles long! Baxter State Park’s location affects its seasons because the park’s winters are long and very server.

The park provides the animals lots of different, unique habitats. Water Birds including; Wood Ducks, loons, Great Blue Herons, and American Bitters live in the beautiful park. Moose go in the water to get away from black flies and mosquitoes in the summertime. Beavers are very important to the park because they build dams which help stop water from over flowing and drowning the soil of the valleys below. Snowshoe Hares, deer, and birds are found getting ready for the park’s harsh winters. Fish of different species are found in the lakes of the park.

There are 46 mountain peeks and ridges in the park including, Mount Katandin. This tall mountain, 5,267 feet, provides an exquisite view. Hiking trails of Baxter State Park’s mountains can be rocky and steep. A lot of people like to climb Mt. Katandin because you can spot many things at the top, such as, animals and other mountains. The tree line of Mount Katandin reaches about 4,000 ft. You can find lots of interesting things while climbing Mt. Katandin.

A sunset reflects across Baxter State Park’s lakes in the evening. Sphagnum Moss are found in many bogs in Baxter State Park. Ponds form because the soil is too thin to provide trees enough nutrients to grow into large, healthy plants. Wassatoquoik Stream is in the central region of the park and it passes through a very long ravine. There area lot of water falls in the northern section of the park. For instance, Little Niagara Falls, a small water fall, empties into a deep pool and showers the rocks below it.

There are some rules and regulations that were made when Governor Percival P. Baxter gave Baxter State park to Maine as a gift. For example, motorized vehicles are not allowed in the park, except for automobiles. Pets aren’t allowed in the Park either. You can’t feed any of the animals in Baxter State Park because the animals need to stay healthy and safe. Rules and regulations were made for a reason, so respect them while you are at Baxter State Park.
