FARMINGTON – A last-ditch effort initiated last month to save the Farmington Diner from demolition may have fizzled.

Farmington’s Planning Board is scheduled to meet Monday and would act on a plan to move the diner, but former diner owners Rose and Mike Grimanis are not on the agenda as Rose said they would be last month.

Grimanis planned to purchase the diner back from owner Rusty Wood and move it to her home on Prescott Street in order to save it. She was still hoping someone else would step forward, she said last month.

The purchase was dependent on the town’s Planning Board and a contractor’s willingness to give them extra time since the board wouldn’t meet until Feb. 11. The date was eight days beyond the 30 days requested by Wood in his sales contract with Rite Aid. The sale took place on Jan. 3.

A Rite Aid drug store will be built on the diner’s site.

A flood plain review by the board was needed to store the diner at the Grimanises’ home on Prescott Street, Code Enforcement Officer J. Stevens Kaiser said previously.

An application was picked up by Grimanis but was not completed and returned, he said Monday.

Kaiser wasn’t sure if another idea was being explored because his office also received inquiries from other interested parties, but no one has stepped forward to date. A short-term approval to move the diner to another location could still be worked out in order to give time for approval by the Planning Board, he said.

Calls from neighbors on Prescott Street have been received by the Code Enforcement Office and Kaiser expected their concerns as well as the time of storage at the Grimanises’ home would have been issues for the board.

Rite Aid developer Bruce Carrier agreed to have construction crews work around the diner until the issue could be resolved but told Wood Monday that the contractor’s crew needs to be able to work in the area soon.

“Carrier has been most helpful and patient,” said Wood on Tuesday, “but time is running out and if nothing happens the diner will be demolished.”

Attempts to reach the Grimanises Monday and Tuesday were not successful. Wood also tried to call them Monday but could not reach them, he said. Wood said he hasn’t heard from Grimanis since she said she was going to buy the diner.

Attempts to reach Carrier were also unsuccessful.

On Monday, the Planning Board will also discuss a site-review application submitted by Adrian Harris. The application requests demolition of an existing home and garage at 148 Wilton Road, located across from Farmington Car Wash, in order to construct a new office building for Harris Real Estate.
