DURHAM – A barn used as a woodworking shop was destroyed by fire Saturday morning on Swamp Road and fire officials put the loss at $75,000. There were no injuries reported.

James Gould, the owner of the shop who lives across the street, told firefighters he had been in the building earlier in the morning, but no one was inside when the blaze was discovered.

A state fire marshal was called to 20 Swamp Road and it was determined that the fire started in the area of a hot-air furnace used to heat the building.

The shop, a 1-story wood-frame structure measuring about 20-by-40 feet, was a total loss, as was an attached sunroom measuring about 8-by-16 feet. An open garage on the back side of the shop was heavily damaged by flames, but some of the contents in that section were saved, Fire Chief Bill St. Michel said.

As there is no public water supply in Durham, about three-dozen firefighters from Lisbon Falls, Pownal and Freeport joined with Durham firefighters to form a tanker shuttle to bring water from a hydrant to the scene in sub-freezing temperatures. A fire truck from Auburn filled in at the Durham station.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour after the fire was reported at 8:12 a.m., St. Michel said. It took another four hours to ensure that hot spots and debris were extinguished following the collapse of the roof, he said.
