JAY – The Maine Department of Transportation is not willing to move a truck weigh-station on Routes 2 and 4 in Wilton but suggested selectmen consider posting Hyde Road to heavy trucks, Town Manager Ruth Marden said.
Selectman Rick Simoneau had requested Marden look into the state moving the weigh-station where it sets up its mobile weigh-system to encompass Route 133 in Farmington.
Simoneau said that several of the big rigs seemed to be traveling the route to Jay and taking Hyde Road to get back on Route 4. He thought maybe they were trying to avoid the weigh-station, but one trucker pointed out that the route is quicker and some truckers are coming up Route 156 then down Hyde Road.
Simoneau voiced concerns that the town road wasn’t built to handle heavy trucks and about safety of other vehicles traveling the same road.
Selectmen will get an update on the situation when they meet at 6:30 today at the Jay-Niles Memorial Library in North Jay.
The board will also be discussing a building inspector position, including what they would like enforced and how money should be put in the budget for 2008-09.
The town is required to have a building inspector because there are more than 2,000 residents.
Selectmen will not take up setting sewer rates at this meeting but will address it at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the library, Marden said.
They will be asked to consider re-activating an Ordinance Committee that has not been active since before Marden came to Jay, she said.
