The U.S. House has approved a bill that would set the stage for improvements to Maine’s Acadia National Park.

Rep. Michael Michaud sponsored the House version of the bill aimed at extending the Acadia National Park Advisory Commission for 20 more years and increasing the park’s land acquisition ceiling by $10 million, to $28 million.

The bill also authorizes spending on a transportation center to serve as a hub for the Island Explorer bus system aimed at mitigating pollution and easing traffic congestion.

Tuesday’s House vote was praised by Maine’s entire congressional delegation. The Senate is expected to consider companion legislation sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins in a few weeks.
