WILTON – The Farmington Diner has found a new home.
It will be moved next week to Wilton, where it will be stored, at least for a while, said new owner Rachel Jackson Hodsdon on Wednesday.
Her agreement with Rite Aid developer Bruce Carrier calls for the diner to be removed from it’s Intervale home by Feb. 22 so that he can continue construction of the store, he said.
Carrier sold the diner for the sum of $1, Jackson Hodsdon said Nickerson Building Movers of Kingfield will relocate the building for another $15,000, she said. The move is expected to take three days, weather permitting, she said.
Jackson Hodsdon runs The Nonprofit Information Center in a small green farmhouse at the corner of Cemetery Road and Route 2 in East Wilton. She plans to store the diner there temporarily while she seeks community feedback and figures out what to do with it. She has a vision to make the diner a place that represents the community, she said.
“I have ended up with the diner but it’s not going to be mine. This is going to be a community project,” she said.
Her hopes include a place that will feature local foods. It will be different than what patrons of the diner have had before, but she’s open to peoples’ ideas, she said.
While it’s a move to another town, time might work to her advantage with a new motel set to open near the area, she added. Time is also needed to seek planning board approval, but Jackson Hodsdon has quietly worked on the idea for months, she said.
“It was a shame to have it destroyed,” she said, so she called and feels her ownership is something that was meant to be.
“It’s amazing how many people have helped make this move possible. It’s a perfect example of just how wonderful this community is. I am very optimistic that great things are in store for the diner,” she stated in a news release.
She plans to work with the American Diner Museum to see if parts of it can be restored to it’s original style, depending on cost, she said.
Jackson Hodsdon has restaurant experience, she said. She has operated restaurants in Rumford Center and Newry.
