As a former employee of Dr. Robert Limoges, I commend him for the amazing community service he provides with Dentistry with a Heart. Not only does he open his doors to free dentistry once a year, but he and Dr. Kevin Connelly also participate with Donated Dental Care, a nonprofit that provides dental care for handicapped, elderly, medically compromised and low-income people.

Clearly there is a shortage of dentists in this state, and a large population of MaineCare recipients and low income uninsured that go without dental care.

I have been in this field for 20 years now and heard many say they have done their community service. That may be so but the need is always going to be there.

There are many dentists across the state who do their part by being involved in Donated Dental, Give Kids Back A Smile and other ways, but it’s not enough. Perhaps the answer to the problem is a dental school or residency program for the state of Maine. That would be a great way to bring dentists into this state, and provide valuable relief to already overwhelmed dentists.
