RUMFORD – The Board of Appeals will hold a hearing Tuesday regarding selectmen’s dismissal of all eight Charter Commission members.

The five-member appeals board will meet at 6:15 p.m. in the Municipal Building conference room for a prehearing discussion, then conduct the hearing at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.

A majority of selectmen voted to dismiss the Charter Commission on Feb. 7. That followed a complaint against the commission by tax collector Carlo Puiia, who charged that the group had violated Chapter 11 of the town’s ordinances, which calls for keeping complete and accurate records of meetings, and Chapter 38, which outlines the complaint procedure.

The appeals panel can uphold the selectmen’s decision or overrule it, which would allow the commission to finish the revision of the town’s charter.

The hearing will be held in public and will closely follow a legal format where each side may present an opening statement, call witnesses and conduct cross examinations.

If either side disagrees with the Board of Appeals’ decision, it may take the case to court.
