NAPLES – The cause of a fire that destroyed a home on Thompson Point Road early Sunday morning is under investigation.

What sparked the midnight blaze, and where it began, haven’t been determined, officials said.

A Naples firefighter who declined to provide his name said no one was injured.

He wouldn’t say if anyone was in the home at the time. “I cannot divulge if anyone was home,” he said. “It’s under investigation.”

There was so much damage, according to the firefighter, that it was hard to tell what happened. The fire was still smoking at 12:41 a.m. when he arrived, he said, and it was after 6 a.m. Sunday when everyone returned to the station.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office in Augusta is handling the investigation, and will be at the scene Tuesday.

The owners of the home are said to be staying with family and friends.
