AUBURN – Classes were canceled at Central Maine Community College on Tuesday night after a bomb threat was discovered scrawled on a bathroom wall.
According to the written message, a bomb was set to detonate at 4:30 p.m. The school was evacuated and students sent home for the day. School security teams searched the building and found nothing.
With most students headed home, administrators decided to cancel classes and activities for the night.
The message was discovered on a bathroom wall at Jalbert Hall shortly after 4 p.m. The building houses classrooms, a lecture hall, library, dining area, computer labs and administrative offices.
Police and fire crews went to the Turner Street school and stood by while CMCC security officers scoured the building.
“The college has special security protocols they follow in situations like these,” said Deputy Chief Jason Moen of the Auburn Police Department.
Investigators did not disclose the exact wording of the message found on the bathroom wall, but said it clearly implied that an explosion should be expected.
“It was pretty obvious,” Moen said.
Police are attempting to track down the person who wrote the message. School officials said classes at CMCC will resume this morning.
