The road to the Class A high school hockey championship goes through Lewiston, in many more ways than one.
The Lewiston High School Blue Devils have earned the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Class A tournament, and should they advance to the Class A state final, they would play all but one game in the friendly confines of the Andrsocoggin Bank Colisee. The Eastern and Western Class A finals are held each year at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
St. Dom’s, meanwhile, caught a break in the last week of the season. The Saints, until the final games came through this week, were slated to face Scarborough in the preliminary round. Scarborough would have had plenty of motivation against St. Dom’s. The Saints lost to the Red Storm earlier in the season, but the MPA reversed that game’s result due to a violation of the rules by Scarborough coach Jay Mazur.
Instead, the Saints open up at home Saturday at 6 p.m. against Westbrook, which leapt into 11th place with a win over Poland/Gray-New Gloucester in the final game of the season.
Westbrook is coached by former Saints’ forward Travis Jalbert.
The Patriotic Knights, meanwhile, after spending some time this season as high as third in the standings, came in as the fifth-place team in the Eastern bracket, and will square off against No. 4 Lawrence in the quarterfinals.
The rest of the East bracket has No. 2 Brewer hosting No. 7 Brunswick, No. 3 Waterville hosting No. 6 Bangor, and No. 8 Messalonskee hosting No. 9 Cony in a preliminary game, the winner of which will face Lewiston on Monday at 7 p.m.
In Western Class A, undefeated Biddeford, No. 2 Kennebunk, No. 3 Falmouth and No. 4 Bonny Eagle all earned byes. Portland and Deering will square off to earn the right to face the top-seeded Tigers. Thornton and Scarborough’s winner will see the Scots, St. Dom’s and Westbrook will battle to face Falmouth, while Fryeburg/Lake Region will battle South Portland for the right to see Kennebunk in the quarterfinals.
All four semifinals – two each from Western A and Eastern A – will be at the Colisee this year during an all-day hockey event on Saturday, March 1.
In Class B, Leavitt, after starting the season at 6-0-1, finished the campaign at 10-9-1 and slipped to No. 4 in the Western Class B Heal point standings. The Hornets will face Maranacook/Monmouth in a quarterfinal for the right to face No. 1 York. Cape Elizabeth and Greely will play the other semifinal.
In Eastern Class B, Winslow held off John Bapst to earn the top seed. The Crusaders will host Gardiner in the 2-3 semifinal, while Winslow awaits the winner of a battle of County teams, Houlton-Hodgdon and Presque Isle.
