MINOT – In the only contested race in Friday’s municipal election, Annette Hemond-Annance and Tina M. Kelly will vie for the School Committee seat held by Christopher Woodford.

These two, along with Selectwoman Ida Tripp, who is running unopposed for a fourth three-year term, will be guest speakers at the Minot Consolidated Club’s “Meet the Candidates Night” on Wednesday evening.

Hemond-Annance grew up in Minot. She attended Minot Consolidated School and after graduating from Poland Regional High School continued her education at Mr. Bernard’s School of Hair Fashion. She is a self-employed cosmetologist.

Hemond-Annance lives on Woodman Hill Road with her husband, John Annance, their daughter, 22-month-old Reece, and son, 6-month-old Curtis.

Hemond-Annance said her desire to become more involved in her community arises from her experience as a young student working to meet her community service graduation requirement.

“I don’t want kids to fall through the cracks. I’m a strong advocate for an after-school tutoring program,” she said. Such a program would be free and have benefits for the tutored and tutor.

She said she believes school consolidation should be kept local and that if Minot forms a closer union with Mechanic Falls and Poland, the sharing of programs and resources will help students in all three towns.

Kelly grew up in Lewiston and, after graduation from St. Dominic Regional High School, earned her bachelor of science degree in management and organizational studies from the University of Southern Maine.

Kelly worked nine years in Central Maine Medical Center’s human resources department, leaving there about a year ago to devote more time to her family.

She lives on Mountain View Drive with her husband, Tom Kelly, and their daughters, Olivia and Allison, in the fifth and third grades, respectively, at the Minot Consolidated School.

Kelly volunteers at the school and helps out regularly in the classroom. She said her desire to serve on the School Committee is an outgrowth of her involvement at the school.

“I have no ax to grind. I just want to become more a part of the process and, with my interests and abilities, can help sorting priorities and negotiating contracts, and working to meet budgets,” she said.

Candidates Night will start at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school gym.

Polls will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, at the town office.
