STRONG – Residents here are scheduled to head to the polls from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday at Forster Memorial Building to elect a new selectman for a three-year term. No one took out papers for the position vacated by Selectman Rebecca Croteau in January, Town Clerk Lois Barker said.

There has been some talk about write-in candidates for the position but nothing official, Treasurer Sandra Howard said.

Barker said two people are vying for a three-year SAD 58 director’s term. Incumbent Gerald “Mike” Pond is opposed by Gina DiCrocco, Barker said.

Town meeting will reconvene at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Forster building.

It looks to be “pretty calm” this year but you never know, Barker said.

Her husband, selectmen’s Chairman Clyde Barker, said he doesn’t see anything that will spark controversy though the Budget Committee’s separation of the park and recreation account into two questions may draw some attention.

Article 30 asks what amount voters would raise for parks for next year. The requested amount is $1,000, but the Budget Committee is recommending $700.

In Article 31, voters will be asked to raise and appropriate money for the recreation account. Both the select board and Budget Committee are recommending $1,600.

Voters will also be asked to authorize selectmen to buy a new plow truck with necessary equipment and appropriate up to $86,000 to fund it.

The town’s accountant said selectmen don’t have to ask to buy the truck since it is already budgeted money, but Clyde Barker said the board opted to do it this way as a courtesy to residents.

“We need a plow truck,” he said. “Our equipment is real, real old and we need to buy a new truck.”

Voters annually are asked to raise and appropriate $20,000 for the special equipment fund, but the account is not keeping up with the needs, Barker said.
