LEWISTON – “It’s so easy! People should take advantage of this program. It’s free and you may go home with a big smile on your face,” said John Gosselin of Lewiston. Gosselin and his wife, Sharie, attended Super Refund Saturday on Feb. 9 at the Multi-Purpose Center, sponsored by the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition.

Gosselin was one of 134 area residents who received free tax preparation assistance by volunteers who are IRS-certified. An asset-building “fair” was also on site for attendees to take advantage of financial literacy opportunities, with volunteer asset-building coaches responding to inquiries.

The Super Refund Saturday is a highlight of the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition’s fifth tax season as an advocate for the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal tax credit for low-to-moderate-income workers; free tax preparation; and asset-building education. Since 2004, the outreach has returned $3,885,821 to residents in the Lewiston-Auburn area.

Volunteer tax preparers are still available to e-file federal and state returns through the end of March at the Multi-Purpose Center or Auburn City Hall. Those interested in scheduling a free appointment may call 513-3160.
