LEWISTON – The message in the locker room after Wednesday night’s emotional win over Halifax was clear: Rest up and get ready.

“It’s going to be a challenge for all of us,” Maineiacs’ assistant coach Jeff Guay said after the game. “As a coaching staff, we’re going to have to make sure the players know that each game from here on out needs to be played at a high intensity, like the two (against Halifax) that we just played.”

The Maineiacs have been in a similar situation before: Coming off a big, emotional win and playing a team that is, at least on paper, weaker than the previous opponent can be tough.

Friday, that “weaker” opponent is the Rocket of Prince Edward Island, a team that has given the Maineiacs difficulty all season, especially in Charlottetown. Trumpeting the mantra of the team’s head coach, Guay reinforced that any team in the league, especially this season, can win on any given night.

“Nothing’s easy, especially on the road,” Guay said.

And especially in Charlottetown, where Lewiston is 1-2 against the Rocket. At home, the Maineiacs are 2-0 against PEI.

The Maineiacs are in the middle of an intense battle for position in the Eastern Division. With fewer than 10 games to play, Lewiston is in fourth place, one point ahead of Acadie-Bathurst, and four back of Cape Breton, which is in third place.

Halifax and Saint John are nine and eight points ahead of Lewiston, respectively, in first and second place in the East.

Stefano Giliati broke out of a mini-slump with a shorthanded goal Wednesday, and is now just four away from breaking Mathieu Aubin’s mark for career goals in a Maineiacs’ uniform.

Lewiston won’t have time to waste after Friday’s game, either, as the Maineiacs will come right back home and host Shawinigan on Sunday at 4 p.m.
