PERU – Residents on Saturday will vote for the third time in two years on whether to change the road commissioner’s position from an elected one to an appointed one.

The change was rejected in March 2006 by a vote of 196-81 and in November 2007 by a much closer vote, Town Clerk Vera Parent said.

Saturday’s special town meeting on the issue will be held at 9 a.m. at the Peru Elementary School.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer said there were 110 names on a petition to bring the question back for a third time.

Selectmen took over as acting road commissioner after David Gammon resigned last October, then named Rick Vaughn as road foreman in November.

If voters approve the proposal, selectmen would appoint someone as road foreman and give that person most of the duties of the road commissioner.

In other matters this week, Pulsifer said the board voted Monday night to authorize getting another 35 tons of salt to supplement the dwindling supply.

Recently, the board was told by Planning Board member Joe Roach that property owners should come to the town office and look at their property as it relates to the new Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps.
