JAY – Pierre is now at rest after an exhaustive illness of pulmonary fibrosis. He died peacefully on the morning of March 5.
He was born in Chisholm, the fourth son of Pierre and Alice (LaCroix) Gilbert. He married Yvonne Legere Grandbois of Lewiston in 1965. He attended Jay schools and lived in Jay until his retirement from International Paper Co.
He worked at the company’s Otis Mill before moving to the Androscoggin Mill when it opened in 1966. He retired in 1995 with 44 years of service.
He loved the outdoors. The north Franklin county town of Eustis was a big part of his life. He bought his hunting camp in 1963, and converted it to a year-round home. He lived there throughout his retirement years.
His many, many friends can attest to his fun-loving spirit, whether at work or play. Fishing, hunting, four-wheeling and snowmobiling were his passion. He loved to explore the North Maine woods seeking views of Maine’s beautiful wilderness and wildlife. He enjoyed travel, especially to Arizona in America’s west and the Province of Quebec in Canada.
He is survived by his sister, Sally Beaudoin and husband, John; his sister-in-law, Anita Gilbert, Albert’s widow; brothers, Gerard Gilbert and his wife, Charlene, Jimmy Gilbert and his wife, Patsy and Paul Gilbert and his wife, Jean; many nieces and nephews; and adult stepchildren, Blanche Normandeau, Richard Grandbois, Priscilla Morse, Diane Rich, Debra Stanley and their families.
He was predeceased by his wife, Yvonne, who was the love of his life; his parents; and his oldest brother, Albert Gilbert.
Our family thanks all who extended good words for him, especially the Rev. Paul Plante, Dr. Heidi Decker, and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice nurses and aides and the eucharistic ministers from St. Rose of Lima Church. You were a great comfort to him.
