LISBON – Michael Siragusa and Holly Buzzle lost their home and all their belongings, including a nursery for their expected newborn, in a fast-moving house fire Friday morning.

When they learned that their home was burning, the couple was on their way to Connecticut to attend the funeral of Siragusa’s father. They had not even gotten out of town. They were at a Dunkin’ Donuts getting coffee when they got a call.

“My sister called to tell me my house was on fire,” Siragusa said. “It went quick. You could see the smoke seven miles away. Everything we own is gone.”

Siragusa and Buzzle are engaged, he said. Buzzle is eight months pregnant.

“We just got done the baby’s room,” Siragusa said. “All the baby’s stuff is gone, all our furniture and all our clothes, all but what we had to take to Connecticut for the weekend. The worst part is the pictures. We’re never going to get those back.”

Lisbon Fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau said the origin of the fire hadn’t been determined as of Friday night, but he is “leaning” toward a kerosene heater that was placed too close to combustibles. It was not considered suspicious, he said.

The home at 6 Merrill Ave. is in an older neighborhood where residences are close together. The house was engulfed in flames when firefigfhters arrived shortly before 9:30 a.m., Galipeau said.

“We concentrated on saving all the surrounding structures” by hosing them down, he said.

Some of the vinyl siding at the home of Judy Hardy-Goddard, about 35 feet away, melted, causing about $300 damage.

The older 1-story wood-frame structure was built in the early 1900s and was insured, Galipeau said. He estimated loss to the home and contents at about $100,000.

A pet cat survived the fire.

Siragusa said the home was previously owned by his parents, who lived there for nearly three decades.

“Thirty years of history is out the window,” he said. “It’s just unbelievable.”

In addition to Lisbon and Lisbon Falls Fire Companies, firefighters from Topsham, Durham and Lewiston fire departments assisted at the scene.
