Here we go again.
In an article by The Associated Press, Feb. 27, Gov. John Baldacci maintained that raising taxes would be a last resort, the comment coming after the state’s Revenue Forecasting Committee affirmed another $95 million downward adjustment of estimated General Fund revenue.
But an increase was not ruled out.
At a time when the country is headed toward a recession, with people losing their jobs, selling their homes, and unable to pay their fuel bills, raising taxes is not an answer.
Where are people going to get the money to pay more taxes?
State officials should do the same thing the rest of us do when we do not have the funds – scale back, budget, and cut or eliminate some projects that are not necessary at the moment.
