JAY – School Committee members have unanimously approved extending the third-quarter from March 28 to April 4 and making changes to the school calendar to offset eight snow days.

The board approved using the Friday, March 21, teacher workshop day as a student day Thursday and designated the last three days of school as early-release days.

That means that students will go to school for a half day on June 17, 18 and 19, tentatively, and teachers will use the second half of those days as in-service, Superintendent Robert Wall said.

The committee also approved Wall seeking a one-day waiver from the Maine Department of Education, and if there is another snow day, he’ll need to seek a waiver for a second day.

Seniors are still scheduled to graduate on Sunday, June 8, but staff will need to look at ways for them to make up days if there are more snow days this school year. Eighty percent of the senior class would have to attend to count as a makeup day.

The school panel also approved using $12,000 from a short-term reserve containing $15,000 for a two-part contract proposal for air conditioning and ventilation work at the high school.

Part one is for $3,250 for exhaust ventilation and part two is for $8,750 for an air conditioning unit in the technology server room. They lost some equipment there because it was too hot and it fried, Wall said.

Maintenance Supervisor Sue Weston said they started off with six servers in that room and now they have 22.
