A Navy petty officer was struck and killed instantly by a bread delivery truck Monday morning on Interstate 295 in Bowdoinham.
State police say they aren’t sure why Christopher Strom, 30, of Pittsfield was standing in the driving lane. According to a statement by Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, Strom was standing with his arms over his head when he was struck at 10:15 a.m. Police say Strom’s car wasn’t disabled and there was no debris in the road blocking his car.
Strom had called his girlfriend 15 minutes earlier to tell her he was on his way home, Maine State Trooper Timothy Black reported. Strom’s car was parked in the breakdown lane at mile 39. Originally from Washington state, Strom worked at the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Kevin Yarboro, 40 of Attleboro, Mass., was driving the bread truck. Police say Yarboro will not be charged.
Northbound traffic on 295 was detoured for about three hours after the accident.
