WILTON – A report of a suspicious man going through vehicles Monday on Main Street has police investigating the theft of a motor vehicle.
Officer Douglas Geis responded to a report of a man entering vehicles in the parking lot of the Boiler Room and Bradley’s Pizza on Monday, police Chief Dennis Brown said.
While taking a description of the suspect and attempting to locate him from a tag on the vehicle, Brown said, the department was called to respond to Osgood’s in East Dixfield for the theft of a motor vehicle. The tag had police heading for Jay when they were called to Osgood’s, he said. The vehicle stolen was the same one they were starting a search for in Jay.
Apparently the suspect, described as a white man in his early 20s with short dark hair, stole a truck in Dixfield and when he got to Osgood’s was running out of gas so he wrecked the vehicle, Brown said.
He then stole a vehicle from Osgood’s parking lot and drove to Wilton where he attempted to steal two other vehicles, Brown said. Cash totaling $1,200 was taken from inside the truck stolen in Dixfield, Brown added.
Police have a photograph and DNA evidence from the truck, he said. They hope to have enough evidence for an arrest soon, but Brown urged anyone who has any information to call Wilton police at 645-3876.
