OXFORD – A single-vehicle accident briefly shut down a major road Tuesday evening.

Officer James Richardson of the Oxford Police Department said Ritchie Dow, 59, of Cumberland was traveling south on Route 26 when her vehicle slid on ice at about 4:45 p.m. near the Oxford Advent Christian Church.

“She lost control of her vehicle and ended up hitting a snowbank,” Richardson said.

Dow’s 2002 Ford Explorer rolled over once and came to rest on its wheels in the southbound lane. The vehicle was totaled.

Richardson was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital by Oxford Rescue after complaining of stomach pain, which Richardson said was caused by the seat belt.

“Thank God she was wearing her seat belt,” Richardson said. “I really believe that if she hadn’t had her seat belt on she wouldn’t be alive.”

A nursing supervisor said Wednesday that Dow had been discharged from the hospital.

Traffic was diverted to Fore Street for about an hour after the accident.

Richardson said he was assisted by Officer Alan Coffin and the Oxford Fire Department. Police also notified the Maine Department of Transportation about the road conditions.
