LEWISTON – The AARP Tax Aide program and SeniorsPlus have partnered to offer seniors one-on-one help with completing paperwork for the economic stimulus rebate.
“For those older adults who usually don’t file a tax return, the process to receive the economic stimulus package means they must file the simple 1040A form. SeniorsPlus and the AARP tax aides have received so many calls for assistance that the most sensible thing to do seemed to be to work together and help as many people as possible,” said Connie Jones, director of community services, from SeniorsPlus.
She said, “We’re offering several days of appointments where the process will be explained, forms given out and people can choose to take the forms home and fill them out themselves, or they can have the staff and volunteers from both AARP and SeniorsPlus help fill them out while there, and they can leave with the paperwork all done and in the mail.”
Seniors can choose from two dates, Wednesday, April 2, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., or Tuesday, April 8, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Appointments are necessary and can be made by calling SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-7241 or 795-4010. Both days of appointments will be held at SeniorsPlus, 8 Falcon Road.
Seniors are asked to bring the following to their appointment: social security card and a photo ID (if available), the yearly summary of their Social Security earnings for 2007 or the amount of their monthly Social Security payment.
If they want their stimulus package check to be direct deposited to their checking account, they need to also bring their checking account number. The 1040A form, instructions, envelopes and stamps, and a copy of their completed form for their own records will all be provided.
