PARIS – A 48-year-old Turner man was sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday for having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old Buckfield girl.

Calvin Wesley Ames, of 16 Dow Farm Road, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor out of Androscoggin County and a count of unlawful sexual contact out of Oxford County.

Justice Roland Cole sentenced Ames in Oxford County Superior Court to serve 60 days of a three-year prison sentence. Ames must also serve two years of probation, register as a sex offender for 10 years, attend psychological counseling, and have no contact with the teen or girls under the age of 18, except family members with supervision.

Ames was indicted in Oxford County in June on 11 counts of unlawful sexual contact. He was indicted in Androscoggin County on the single count in September. Ames was accused of having a consensual sexual relationship with the girl between February and April 2007.

Assistant District Attorney Richard Beauchesne said Ames has no prior criminal record and that a psychological evaluation determined his risk to re-offend to be low. However, he also said Ames had failed to take responsibility for the crimes. Beauchesne recommended that Ames serve six months in jail.

“It gives him significant time to reflect,” Beauchesne said.

The girl’s parents did not address the court, but Beauchesne said they had requested that Ames serve no less than three months in jail.

Defense attorney Maurice Porter disagreed with Beauchesne.

“He has repeatedly accepted sole responsibility,” Porter said.

Porter said Ames has been attending counseling, which led Cole to withhold ordering Ames to attend sex offender counseling. Porter said an extended jail term would lead to Ames losing his job and home, and requested that Ames spend 30 days in jail.

“A sex offender losing his residence is essentially the death penalty,” Porter said.

Shortly before his sentencing, Ames apologized to the girl’s parents.

Cole said he believes 60 days in jail is an appropriate sentence.

“I intend to give you a chance to redeem yourself,” Cole told Ames, “and I think there’s no reason you can’t do that.”
