MEDFORD, Mass. – Senior second baseman Denis Hogan went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored as Bates College earned an 8-6 win over Tufts in NESCAC baseball action Saturday.
Senior Sean VanderVliet pitched seven strong innings for the Bobcats (4-4), allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven.
The Jumbos (6-6) put the potential winning run on base in the top of the ninth when the Bates bullpen got wild with three walks and two hit batters. But junior Chuck Murphy-Romboletti secured the final out on a pop-up to give Bates its first win over Tufts since 2004.
Maine, Wagner splits
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The University of Maine split a doubleheader with Wagner College, taking the opener 6-2, before falling 2-1 in Game 2 in baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1, the Seahawks (6-10) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. But Maine answered back with four runs in the top of the second inning. Joey Martin led off the inning with a walk.
Three batters later, Tony Patane hit a three-run double to left field scoring Martin, Kevin Jackson and Danny Menendez.
Joe Miller pitched the complete game for Maine, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out eight batters and improving to 3-1 on the season.
In Game 2, the Black Bears (6-12) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Kevin McAvory hit a sacrifice fly to plate Myckie Lugbauer.
Trinity 1, Bowdoin 0
HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity starter Tim Kiely tossed a four-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks as the Bantams tripped up Bowdoin 1-0 in NESCAC baseball action Saturday.
Men’s lacrosse
Williams 12, Bates 7
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bates College led as late as the third quarter but eventually lost to rival Williams College 12-7 in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action Saturday.
Senior Craig Blake scored twice and assisted on two other goals for the Bobcats (2-6). Blake, who had assisted on the goal that tied the game at 3-3, put Bates up 4-3 when he notched an unassisted tally at 14:13 of the third quarter.
Bates fired off 11 shots in the third quarter alone, while the Ephs (2-3) improved their shot count by four. But, all four of the Eph shots found the back of the net and Williams took a 7-5 at the end of three quarters.
Tommy Murray then triggered a three-goal spree by Williams to initiate the point of no return.
Women’s lacrosse
Bates 13, Williams 7
LEWISTON – Junior Caroline Thomas scored a career-high five goals with one assist to lead Bates to a 13-7 victory over Williams College in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.
Sophomore Molly Radis, sophomore Morgan Maciewicz and first-year Briana Gross each scored two goals apiece for the Bobcats (3-3). Sophmore Avery Pierce and Katelyn Drake added one goal each.
Bates outshot Williams, 38-17, including a 23-7 advantage in the first period, when the Bobats jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and built an 8-3 margin by halftime.
