LEWISTON – Maine Campus Compact, a consortium of 18 higher education institutions dedicated to promoting community service, civic engagement and service-learning in higher education, will present David Harris of the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College with this year’s Harward Award for Service Learning Excellence.

The award, in its seventh year, honors faculty who have demonstrated a commitment to using service learning to address community needs. Harris will be presented with the award at a ceremony at the State House on Wednesday, April 2.

Harris’ efforts include utilizing geographical information systems to formulate maps of food insecurity in Lewiston and analyzing data for the Maine Island Trail Association to help inform land use policy. He relishes bringing “real world” science to his students and helps further Maine Campus Compact’s efforts as an active advocate for service learning.
