NORTH TURNER – In spite of the snow, the congregation at North Turner Union Presbyterian Church is betting that spring will come and that the annual mud will come with it. So they have scheduled the local celebration of mud season with their annual Mud Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, at the GAR Hall, Route 219.
In keeping with the theme, the church women go all out to come up with dishes that are brown. So there will be lots of chocolate for dessert along with well-browned homemade pies. There will also be baked beans with hot dogs, casseroles with toasted brown tops, ham, homemade wheat and rye bread as well as coffee, tea and chocolate milk. The supper is one of the major fundraisers to help with church expenses.
Church members have been busy over the winter compiling a cookbook that highlights old and new recipes from current church members, recipes from community members, past and present, and some fun ones like “Punk’s Revenge” from head Selectman Lawrence “Punk” House.
The cookbook, “Blissful Bread and Other Sustenance,” can be pre-ordered and will go on sale for Mother’s Day. Only 200 will be printed. The church is planning for at least one, if not two, tasting suppers over the summer where those attending will get to try the dishes made from the cookbook recipes.
The church is also hoping to hold a Vacation Bible School and would like to hear from parents in Turner or the surrounding communities who might be interested in having their children attend. To pre-order a cookbook or for information or to sign up a children for Bible school, call 224-7913, 779-6658 or 225-3370.
Everyone is welcome to attend the Mud Supper. A free-will donation will be accepted. Church is held at 9 a.m. Sundays, and the congregation welcomes everyone.
