Dear Sun Spots: Approximately a week or so ago, there was a request from two different high schools (I don’t remember which ones) looking for prom gowns. I saved the column but apparently misplaced it. I do have a few gowns that I have collected and would like to donate, however, I now need the contact number and a name. Will you please print this in hopes that someone will get in touch with me. My phone number is 514-5159. Call and leave message if needed. Thank you, Sunspots. – Janelle, Lewiston.

Answer:
Sun Spots was only able to find one high school that has requested prom gowns. Mt. Abram High School in Salem has started a Cinderella’s Closet. This is a project started by two senior girls to assist other students with acquiring gowns, shoes and accessories for the upcoming prom in May who might not otherwise be able to afford to go to the prom. Donations are currently being sought for this project. If you have any gowns, shoes, or accessories, please contact Sharon Dudley at Mt. Abram High School 678-2701, ext. 108.

Dear Sun Spots: Is there a business in the L/A area that professionally sharpens knives; kitchen, hunting, fishing knives, etc. for the small volume (one or two at a time) residential consumer? Thank you. – Andrew, Lewiston.

Answer: Sun Spots spoke with Brianna at Mathieu Saw & Tool in the Industrial Park at 7 Enterprise St. in Lewiston. They offer knife sharpening services and are happy to help you. The price depends on the kind of knife, but generally kitchen knives will cost between $1.50 and $5.50 and hunting knives are $1.25 per inch. They are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. You can go to the business and drop off what you need sharpened or call ahead, 783-9087. It usually takes five working days.

Dear Sun Spots: You do great work for all of us. I am a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society. I get my info from three hard-working ladies. Bonnie, the boss; Debbie keeps me on the road. She tells me where to go and when. Last but not least Debbie – the office person.

I take patients from home to their appointments and wait and bring them back home. I love my work. Good pay, good benefits. My love to all. – Bob, Auburn.

Answer:
Please note that the American Cancer Society needs more volunteer drivers in the Lewiston/Auburn areas, as well as outlying areas in Franklin and Oxford counties. The Road to Recovery service program provides free transportation for cancer patients to get to their treatments and back home again. Transportation is provided according to the needs and available resources in the community. Volunteers are offered an incentive of a $25 gas card for every 150 miles of driving patients. Volunteers must have their own vehicle, a good driving record and the desire to help a cancer patient get to their radiation, chemotherapy or doctor appointments. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver, please contact Bonnie Bickford at the American Cancer Society office via e-mail at bonnie.bickford@cancer.org or by phone at 800-464-3102, ext. 3729, and she will send you an application.

Dear Readers: In Thursday’s column we published a notice about a benefit auction at the VFW on Minot Avenue in Auburn on Saturday, April 26. The notice indicated the auction begins at 3 p.m., but the event is actually an all-day affair with the hall open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Matthew Foster of Minot, who is currently in Tennessee undergoing treatment for leukemia. FMI: call Amanda May at 376-7458.
