MEDFORD, Mass. – Bates and Bowdoin split a pair of games played at Tufts on Sunday in a NESCAC-East showdown. Bates, serving as the home team, dropped a 17-1 decision to the Polar Bears in the opener, but recovered for a 5-0 win in Game 2.
Molly Nestor drove in five runs and Alison Coleman hit a two-run home run in the first game, which was ended by the mercy rule.
In Game 2, first-year pitcher Sarah Cullen scattered four hits and a walk while striking out two over seven innings. Cullen was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs.
UMF sweeps
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Sarah DeFilipp limited Elms College to five hits over seven innings in Game 1 and Liz Bergeron scattered six hits over six innings in Game 2 to lead UMF to a two-game, season-opening sweep over the Blazers.
Tufts 4, Bowdoin 3
MEDFORD, Mass. – Christy Tinker hit a three-run home run in the first inning to pace Tufts to a 4-3 win over Bowdoin in NESCAC softball action. Tufts earned its thrd straight win over the Polar Bears.
Trinity 3, Colby 2
HARTFORD, Conn. – Gabrielle Sergi pitched a two-hitter, allowing just a pair of hits in the first inning, to lead Trinity to a 3-2 NESCAC softball win over Colby on Sunday. Alex Essman of Colby connected on a two-run home run, the lone highlight in the game for the Mules.
UNE, Endicott split
BIDDEFORD – Sarah Hamel fired a shutout in Game 1 but Endicott battled back for seven runs in Game 2 as UNE and Endicott split a pair of softball games Sunday.
Hamel scattered six hits in her Game 1 win, the Nor’Easters’ first over Endicott in seven years.
Baseball
Elms sweeps UMF
HOLYOKE, Mass. – R.J. Vassallie threw a complete game three-hitter in Game 1 and Elms College rallied to win Game 2 in its last at-bat in a two-game sweep over the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday.
Elms took Game 1 31, and edged out the Beavers 6-5 in the night cap.
USM, Rhode Island split
Adam Ross earned a win in Game 2 of a double-header to help USM salvage a split with Rhode Island College on Sunday.
Fryeburg Academy graduate Andrew Stacy had two hits in the win.
