FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (AP) – Police have arrested a New Bedford man in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 30-year-old man during a fight outside a Fairhaven VFW.

Detectives arrested 24-year-old Carmelo Lopez on Sunday at his Pleasant St. home on charges of assault with intent to murder.

He will be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court.

Joshua Fitzgerald died Saturday morning at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston following the attack that left his brother and another man with serious stab wounds.

The wounded were being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police say they responded at about 10:40 p.m. Friday to reports of a large fight outside the VFW, which was hosting a “Hip Hop Night.”

They say they found Williams collapsed on the street.

Police Chief Gary Souza says more arrests are likely.
