BELFAST (AP) – The Coast Guard has ended its search for the pilot of a small plane that crashed into the ocean waters off Belfast.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the small aerobatic plane, an SIAI-Marchetti SF-260, crashed into water off Belfast airport around 6 p.m. Sunday. The Coast Guard identified the pilot as 60-year-old Doug Low of Lincolnville, the owner of Ace Aviation.

During the nearly 15-hour search that ended Monday morning, Coast Guard and Maine Marine Patrol vessels and two Coast Guard helicopters were assisted by local agencies.

Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Curtis Barthel said the Marine Patrol and Maine State Police were continuing an underwater search Monday afternoon.
