The hit parade continues for two sweet-swinging alumni from the Lewiston High School softball program.
Ali Coleman clubbed a two-run home run to punctuate Bowdoin College’s nine-run fifth inning Sunday in a satisfying 17-1 rout of rival Bates College.
It wasn’t a perfect day for the Polar Bears. Bates rebounded for a 5-0 win in the nightcap of a neutral-field doubleheader in Medford, Mass., achieving its first win of the season at Bowdoin’s expense.
There haven’t been many down notes for Bowdoin or junior catcher Coleman, however. The split with Bates left the Polar Bears at 15-6 headed into Thursday’s first home date of the season against the University of Maine at Farmington.
Coleman has started 19 of Bowdoin’s 21 games behind the plate, committing only one error en route to a sterling .979 fielding percentage. As for her other duties at the dish, Coleman is hitting at a .262 clip with two homers and eight RBIs.
She’s one of only two Maine natives on the Bowdoin roster.
About an hour to the south in Biddeford, Coleman’s former teammate, Katie Morin, continues to anchor the University of New England with the aluminum and the leather.
Morin, a senior shortstop, is hitting a hefty .400 with a handful of offensive numbers that lead the team. Her 11 RBIs, 10 walks, .522 on-base percentage, three stolen bases and three doubles all top the Nor’easters, who are 7-7.
Another local senior shares the middle infield with Morin. Chelsea Cummings of Oxford has started all but one game at second base for UNE, knocking in five runs.
Softball isn’t the only spring sport at UNE benefiting from the contributions of a Lewiston grad. Sophomore Mallory Long has 10 goals and five assists, good for fifth on the team. Long already has topped her eight tallies from last season, and the Nor’Easters have improved from one win to four with several games in hand.
Farmington pipeline
Maine Maritime Academy men’s lacrosse continues to benefit from the early-decade success of the program at Mt. Blue High School. Three former Cougars highlight the Mariners’ roster, with a pair of seniors leading the offense into the home stretch of the season.
Garrett Lake and Nate Bolduc each scored three goals in a 15-6 road victory over Lyndon State over the weekend, improving MMA to 4-4 overall. Lake, an attacker, and Bolduc, a midfielder, each scored a pair of goals in the opening period, staking the Mariners to a quick 7-2 lead.
Earlier in the week, Bolduc chimed in with two goals against Castleton. Not to be outdone, Lake notched a goal and three assists in loss to Southern Maine. Both teams flaunted a local flavor in that contest, with sophomore Alex Pleau of Lewiston (St. Dom’s) registering two goals and an assist for USM.
Junior Nate Lake is the third Mt. Blue presence in the Maine Maritime lineup, contributing on defense for the Castine corps.
A fourth Mt. Blue graduate, Evan Xanthos, has started all nine games as a junior midfielder at UNE. He’s joined by Bobby Labbe of Lewiston, who has logged seven goals and one assist.
Water world
If you’re tired of ankle-deep mud, too-deep snow banks that refuse to melt and frost on your windshield every morning, you probably don’t want to hear about Jon LaChance.
LaChance is a sophomore enjoying life on the open water for the men’s crew at Ithaca (N.Y.) College. The Bombers won four of five events at their home regatta last weekend, with the Varsity Eight improving its record to 4-1. LaChance served in the role of stroke for the Varsity Four.
It’s a new sport for LaChance, who competed in cross country and track and field at Lewiston High School.
Stealing the attention
Eight games into his baseball career at UMF, Russ Schmelzer of Winthrop has made an immediate impact with his ability to get on base and then inflict plenty of damage once he gets there. Schmelzer is hitting a team-high .360 for the Beavers with a staggering 10 stolen bases.
He’s sharing the outfield with four-year standout Corey Provencher of Rumford (Mountain Valley), who cracked an RBI single in Farmington’s first win of the season after six opening losses, a 10-6 verdict over Becker. UMF swept the twin bill against its league rival.
No sophomore slumps
Jillian Kimball of Albany Township (Telstar) is enjoying a breakout year as a middle infielder with the Saint Joseph’s College softball team. The sophomore is batting .397, up from .278 last season, with 19 RBIs and 13 walks.
Another St. Joe’s sophomore, Jaimee Brett of Otisfield (Oxford Hills), has two goals and three assists for the St. Joe’s women’s lacrosse squad.
