The truth came out.

Wives are recycling at home but some husbands don’t take time to sort the items once they go to the transfer station. They throw it all into the trash.

At least that’s what Livermore Falls transfer station attendant Fred Nadeau told selectmen this week.

He’s finding more bags full of recyclables in the Dumpster rather than in allocated bins at the station.

That’s it, someone said, husbands cannot be trusted. They should be barred from going to the dump.

It drew a round of laughter and a rebuttal from some men that they would gladly give up the chore.

“It’s all yours,” one said, which drew more laughs.

However, a sobering fact dawned: It would mean more chores for the women.

SAD 52 in school 1st day of summer

The snowbanks are going, but winter’s wake leaves school snow days to be made up, especially for Greene, Leeds and Turner.

That district had among the highest number of school closures in the region, if not the state: 14.

To find out how everyone thought the days should be made up, Superintendent Darlene Burdin surveyed parents and staff. Burdin received 700 surveys from parents, 300 from staff.

After a recent school board vote, the results are that students will be going to school on at least one Saturday, May 31. Two workshop days have been converted to regular school days.

And the worst, two long weeks have been added to the school year. The last day of school is June 20.

That’s also the first day of summer. Summer may have to wait a bit.

That last day will be June 23, if a waiver requested of the Maine Department of Education is not approved.
