PORTLAND (AP) – A public forum hosted by U.S. Rep. Tom Allen explored options available to Mainers who face the threat of foreclosure on their homes.

More than 40 people from across southern Maine turned out Saturday in Portland to hear from a panel of experts in the housing, real estate, financial and legal sectors. There was also an opportunity for those at the forum to get individual counseling.

Allen said many Mainers face grave financial difficulties as a result of the subprime loan mess, the plunging economy and the soaring costs of fuel, groceries and health care.

He said the forum was intended to help worried Mainers understand their options and learn about available resources that can help them deal with pending or possible foreclosure.
