PERU – Selectman Rodney Jamison said Monday night that he wants to cut the proposed budget, which now contains an increase of less than $20,000.
Selectman Jim Pulsifer suggested that Jamison should look over the budget and propose specific changes for the board to consider. He said he felt “the only place to cut is the road budget,” and Jamison would have to decide what planned work he proposed the town not do.
Town Clerk Vera Parent agreed that selectmen could change the warrant until April 28, when it must be signed. She said any changes would need to be reviewed by the finance committee, which has already approved the proposed budget.
Residents will have an opportunity to vote on the budget in June.
Road department employee Maurice Brann offered to take the road foreman job vacated by John Moro. The board decided to leave the road crew unchanged until a new road commissioner is elected in June.
Only one bid was submitted for maintenance of cemeteries in town. The work includes mowing, raking and trash removal. Selectmen indicated that the price was acceptable. The bidder will be asked to discuss insurance and their understanding of the work to be done at the next selectmen’s meeting.
Jack Plumley indicated that he did not want to continue as the licensed plumbing inspector so the board appointed David Erington, who will receive 75 percent of the fees charged by the town.
Plumley will continue as code enforcement officer. Plumley also serves several other towns in that capacity.
Jamison pointed out that in light of the increased workload caused by changes in the shoreland zoning ordinance an alternate CEO should be appointed. He said that in the past the chairman of the Planning Board or his alternate issued permits when the CEO was unavailable.
