CASTINE – The University of Maine at Farmington swept a softball doubleheader against Maine Maritime Academy with 7-1 and 5-2 victories at Ritchie Field on Wednesday.

With the victory, Farmington head coach Bob Leib notched his 800th career victory in coaching four sports over a 31-year stand at the university. Leib sits at 255-138 in his softball career. His other records include baseball (134-129-1), men’s soccer (260-94-34) and women’s soccer (151-63-16). Leib is retiring from coaching at the end of this school year.

UMF held a 1-0 advantage going into the fourth inning before erupting for six runs and taking a 7-0 advantage before eventually winning 7-1 in Game 2.

Liz Bergeron got the win for the Beavers, pitching seven innings while giving up five hits and striking out six.

In Game 1, UMF Farmington hurler Sarah Defilipp picked up the win for the Beavers, giving up 10 hits and two runs over eight innings. Lauren Overlook led the Farmington offense with a 2-for-4 afternoon, including one run, two RBIs and a big double to put the game away in the last inning.

Lacrosse

Bates 17, Gordon 8

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior attacker Caroline Thomas tied her career high with five goals to lead the Bates College women’s lacrosse team to a 17-8 non-conference win at Gordon College on Wednesday.

Bates raised its record over the .500 mark to 6-5, while the Fighting Scots fell to 9-4. The Bobcats will play at NESCAC rival Tufts University on Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Bobcats knotted the game at two goals apiece with unassisted goals from Molly Radis and Thomas with 23:24 showing on the clock. Bates’ Morgan Maciewicz made it a 3-2 contest before GC senior MaryRamsey Snell tied the game once again with 16:07 to play in the half.

Baseball

St. Joe’s splits

STANDISH – Saint Joseph’s College earned a split Thomas College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

In Game 1, SJC starting pitcher sophomore Kyle Dorr allowed two hits and struck out six in five scoreless innings of work to improve his season record to 2-1 and freshman Ian Lee was 2-4 with a home run and four RBI’s to help the Monks clinch an 8-0 victory.

St. Joe’s led 5-4 going into the seventh inning but Thomas scored three runs in the top of the inning and the Monks were unable to produce a late rally and lost, 7-5. Freshman outfielder Eric LaBatte was 3-4 with a run and an RBI for the Monks and junior Mike Chamard of Livermore Falls went 4-4 with a run for the Terriers.

Thomas won the second game, 7-4.

USM 16, Colby 9

WATERVILLE – Anthony D’Alfonso and Chris Burleson each homered and had big games as the University of Southern Maine baseball team took a 16-9 win over Colby College in non-conference play Wednesday at Coombs Field.

D’Alfonso had four hits, five RBI and scored three runs. He belted a three-run homer in the first inning for USM (17-7). Burleson had three hits, three runs, and five RBI.

He had a two-run homer in the second inning and came back in the third inning with a bases-clearing triple.
