AUGUSTA (AP) – A new law will change the way oil fees are charged to pay for cleanups at four Maine waste-oil facilities.

Since October, Maine motorists have been paying $1 fees per oil change at service stations, including chain garages that specialize in lube jobs.

That will change under a bill signed Tuesday by Gov. John Baldacci.

Starting Aug. 1 fees will be set at $1.10 per gallon on bulk oil used in gasoline engines and 35 cents per gallon for bulk oil used in diesel engines.

Lawmakers say they changed the fee system because the old one wasn’t generating enough money to clean up the waste oil sites.

State officials acknowledge that the fees are expected to be passed on to consumers.
