WATERVILLE – Alyssa Crowell pitched a two-hit shutout and Amanda Roehn went six strong innings in Game 2 as Colby took 2-0 and 2-1 victories over Bates in NESCAC softball action Friday.
The Mules (8-12) produced the only runs of Game 1 when Lizzi Fort smacked a two-run single to drive in Mollie Puskar and Allyson Cheever in the fifth inning.
Puskar and Alyssa Lepore pounded out two hits each in Game 2 for Colby, while scoring back-to-back in the second inning.
The Bobcats (5-14) got a run back in the fifth inning when Liz Stahler had a one-out single and later came around on a single by Jean McIntyre.
Baseball
St. Joe’s s sweeps
STANDISH – Saint Joseph’s College won a pair of games, 7-2 and 17-3, over Norwich University in baseball action Friday.
Senior Luke Enman went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while freshman Todd Keneborus was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Game 1. Sophomore Pat Moran was the winning pitcher for the Monks (20-12) with six strikeouts and one earned run in six innings.
The Monks scored 11 runs in Game 2 and registered 17 hits in the slugfest. Senior Dustin Spiller was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, and freshman Matt Mullen picked up his first collegiate win in relief.
Colby 11, Bates 6
LEWISTON – Colin Riggs hit two home runs and Colby College banged out 18 hits in an 11-6 rout of Bates in NESCAC baseball action Friday.
Riggs, who scored four runs and drove in four more, was one of four Mules (11-10) who went 3-for-5 at the plate. The Mules chased Bates starter Sean VanderVliet in the fourth inning.
The Bobcats (5-15) were trailing 11-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Denis Hogan and Brian Mahoney came up with a pair of bases-loaded, two-run singles to breath some life into the Bates’ offense. Tom Beaton went 3-for-3 for Bates, while Mahoney and Jake Simon each added a pair of hits.
Bowdoin 17, Thomas 7
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College snapped a three-game losing streak with a rip-roaring 17-7 victory over Thomas College in baseball action Friday.
The Terriers (8-9) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, only to see the Polar Bears roar back with 17 unanswered runs, including an 11-run fourth inning.
The Polar Bears (12-11) were led by Pat Duchette and Brendan Garner, who had three hits apiece. Joe Pace earned the win for Bowdoin, allowing just six hits while striking out five.
