Winter’s heavy snow, reluctant to melt until recently, will push Auburn’s spring cleanup bulky waste collections into May.
“But they will happen,” said Laurie Smith, acting city manager. “We’ve been getting a lot of calls from people concerned, asking if we’re going to do spring cleanup. And we are.”
Councilors resurrected spring cleanup last year, after a two-year hiatus.
The program this year is scheduled to begin on May 5 for residents that have regular trash collections on Mondays. It continues through May.
Residents who have their trash collected on: Mondays should have spring cleanup waste curbside by May 5; Tuesdays, have waste curbside by May 8; Wednesdays, have waste curbside by May 12; Thursdays, have waste curbside by May 14; and Fridays, have waste curbside by May 16
Auburn’s crews will collect waste, including brush and branches, bulky furniture, rugs and mattresses, metals and appliances such as washers or dryers. Residents can leave up to four automobile tires.
In Lewiston, spring cleanup collections begin Tuesday, April 22, and run through May 16.
Residents who have their regular trash collected on: Mondays and Tuesdays should have their spring cleanup waste curbside by April 22; Wednesdays, have waste curbside by April 28; Thursdays, have their spring cleanup waste curbside by May 5; and Fridays, have their spring cleanup waste curbside by May 12.
Lewiston residents can leave up to six bulky items, such as mattresses, rugs or furniture. That can include one television set or computer monitor and one appliance that contains Freon. Crews will also collect up to three cubic yards of solid waste, such as construction debris and yard debris. That amounts to the waste that can fit in normal pickup truck.
Lewiston will not collect tires, auto parts, liquids or items containing hazardous waste or mercury. That includes car batteries and pesticides.
Both cities require piles to be placed along the street on the first day of collections. Trucks will not return once they’ve completed a street and late piles will be skipped entirely.
