WASHINGTON (AP) – Maine Sen. Susan Collins says she and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein have introduced a resolution to designate May 16 as the third annual Endangered Species Day.

The resolution is designed to draw awareness to threats to endangered wildlife, fish and plants, and to what can be done to help them.

The resolution is co-sponsored by a bipartisan group of eight other senators, including Maine’s Olympia Snowe.

According to Collins, celebrity zoologist Jack Hanna will serve as national spokesman for the day and promote species conservation.
