GORHAM – Chris Burleson and Josh Mackey combined for seven hits, five runs scored and six RBIs to lead the University of Southern Maine to an 11-6 victory over Bates Tuesday afternoon.
Burleson smacked a three-run homer, while Ryan Pike had two hits a piece for the Huskies (20-9). Jordan Berthiaume contributed with a solo homer. Brian Mahoney and Rob Patton each collected two hits for Bates (8-17). The Bobcats tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jake Simon. The Huskies countered with six runs in their half of the inning, taking advantage of five hits, a walk, and a costly infield error.
St. Joe’s 10, Albertus Magnus 6
STANDISH – St. Joseph’s defeated Albertus Magnus College 10-6 in a GNAC preliminary, single-elimination playoff game Tuesday.
Pat Moran fanned seven batters en route to picking up the win for the Monks (22-13). Luke Enman went 2-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a triple, while Ben Grant-Roy had two hits, including a homer.
Maine 13, Thomas 4
ORONO – Myckie Lugbauer smacked a home run, a triple, and a double, and recorded four RBIs to lead Maine to a 13-4 victory over Thomas on Tuesday afternoon.
Joe Mercurio hit a homer and a double, and had four RBIs for the Black Bears (15-18-1). Curt Smith contributed with a home run.
Michael Chamard hit a solo homer for the Thomas (9-13) effort.
Softball
Bowdoin splits
BIDDEFORD – The University of New England won 3-2 in Game 1, while Bowdoin posted a 7-4 win the nightcap as the teams split a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.
UNE’s (19-11) Sarah Hamel had a two-out opposite field RBI single to provide the Nor’easters with a 3-2 victory in Game 1. In Game 2, Lauren Coven and Courtney LaPierre each had three hits to pace Bowdoin’s (22-9) 12-hit attack as the Polar Bears captured the 7-4 win. UNE was led by Ashley DePasquale with a two-run homer.
USM splits
GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine and Plymouth State split a doubleheader Tuesday, with Plymouth taking Game 1, 6-5, and the Huskies winning the second contest 3-1 in extra innings.
In Game 1, the Panthers led a 6-1 through six and a half innings, taking advantage of three USM field errors, while pounding out 10 hits, before Southern Maine rallied for four-runs in the bottom of the seventh.
UMF splits
WATERVILLE – The University of Maine at Farmington and Thomas College each came away with a win as the two teams split a doubleheader Tuesday. UMF won the opener 3-0, and Thomas took Game 2, 4-3.
In the opener, the Beavers (15-3) capitalized on five Thomas errors to snatch the 3-0 victory. McKell Barnes doubled in the win, while Lauren Overlock, Kelly McDonough, and Breanna Conners each singled. Sarah Defilipp went the distance, scattering eight hits and striking out five. Hen Higgins singled twice for the Terriers’ (16-9).
In the second contest, Mallorie Blakney tripled home two runs, while Oxley clubbed an RBI double for the Thomas 4-3 win.
