GRAY – Firefighters saved a home that was partially gutted by a mid-morning fire Wednesday.

A woman who was at the 42 Legrow Road home was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, but wasn’t injured by the fire, Fire Chief Rick Plummer said. The owner of the home, Charles Church, wasn’t at the house when the fire broke out.

Flames burned the second floor and attic, causing up to $100,000 damage, Plummer said. The roof didn’t burn, but firefighters cut two holes in it to vent the intense heat, Plummer said.

The fire was believed to be accidental, though the exact cause had not been pinpointed as investigators continued their search Wednesday afternoon, Plummer said.

When firefighters got to the home, heavy smoke was pouring out one end of the 2 story house, he said.

Firefighters from several surrounding towns, including Cumberland, Poland, North Yarmouth, Raymond and Windham, responded to the second-alarm call. Firefighters braved the intense heat inside the home to douse the flames, Plummer said.

“They did an extremely good job,” he said. Casco Rescue transported the woman to the hospital.

Overheated firefighters were treated at the scene. “We’re not quite used to the heat yet,” Plummer said, noting the warmer seasonal daytime temperatures.

Both the homeowner and woman at the home said they would find other accommodations, Plummer said.

There were no hydrants or water ponds near the rural home, but with the many towns’ pumper trucks at the scene, firefighters never ran out of water, Plummer said.
