RUMFORD – Representatives of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises have not yet named a replacement for Seth Carey, the Rumford lawyer who stepped away from his campaign to construct a casino in Oxford County.
When Carey resigned April 17, citing personal legal struggles that could detract from the campaign, MaineCasinoNow.com campaign spokeswoman Pat LaMarche said that within days, perhaps 48 hours from Carey’s announcement, the campaign would clarify who within the campaign would take on leadership roles, including the presidency of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises.
On Friday, LaMarche said no one has yet been named to lead the limited liability corporation or the casino referendum effort.
“I guess there was hope that it would go rapidly,” she said, but “nothing this important should be rushed.”
Although LaMarche said she is not involved in vetting the new president, she said the group searching for a new leader is talking with several people.
As a private business, “a lot of this stuff is just personal information,” LaMarche said, but as soon as “we have a new head of the LLC,” an announcement will be made.
As president and sole manager of Evergreen Mountain Enterprises, Carey filed articles of incorporation in 2006 to promote and start a resort-casino in Oxford County. He spent a good part of the past year successfully gathering signatures to place his proposal on the November ballot as a citizen’s initiative.
Days before his resignation, Carey appeared before the Grievance Commission Board of the Board of Overseers to answer five complaints lodged by two attorneys and a judge, accusing Carey of violating the Maine Bar Association’s Code of Professional Responsibility. Carey is also facing a charge of misdemeanor assault in connection with an alleged incident at his home in early March.
